Obstructive Sleep Apnea (see alternatives to CPAP therapy below)

The most common type of sleep apnea, characterized by periods of stopping breathing during sleep due to an obstruction in the airway by the tongue, soft palate, uvula, or other tissues. OSA reduces the flow of oxygen in the body.

Central Sleep Apnea

When someone temporarily stops trying to breathe because his or her brain briefly does not signal the body to do so. It is usually associated with serious conditions and is most common in overweight men over 40.

Insomnia

Habitual sleeplessness or inability to sleep.

Hypersomnia

Also known as daytime sleepiness is episodes of excessive sleepiness during the day.

Narcolepsy

A neurological disorder that affects the control of sleep and wakefulness. Patients experience excessive daytime sleepiness and intermittent, uncontrollable episodes of falling asleep during the day. Sudden sleep attacks may occur during any type of activity at any time of the day.

Restless Leg Syndrome

A disorder that is related to the nervous system and that causes an urge to move the legs. Because it usually interferes with sleep, it is considered a sleep disorder.

Parasomnia

A disorder characterized by unusual or abnormal behavior during sleep such as sleep walking, sleep eating disorders, or nightmares.
